Perhaps an understanding on his part that time (both as one's remaining and as zeitgeist) preclude grand-standing and grandeur.
But I did come to quibble!
'Crisp' could mean 'dry.' Friends who quarreled the night before may, by morning, be not warm, but civil.
Upon departure "tread, unmoving, like circus poodles dancing on a ball." Here, 'unmoving' may be a not willing to budge emotionally. Yet their minds keep re-hashing the previous night's clashes.
"Something inhuman always rising on us, punching you with embraces" is, I agree, an odd shift from the impersonal 'we' to the impersonal 'you.' I suppose the 'we' may be read as the traditional impersonal, i.e., 'one.' The second perhaps then makes sense as a straightforward 'I.' Just a guess.
I don't think the simile of the broom needs to be descriptively accurate of it from tip of shaft to end of bristle. We can understand the word 'broom' as its handle.
"Straight alcohol" must mean liquor right from the bottle. I can imaging these revelers pouring whiskey (or more likely gin) into glasses with no mixer.
The size and color of a dime. If the point being made is that Lowell ought to have hewed to a straight metaphor, I think that could have worked.
The last five lines "each day" is not Lowell but rather the mood that the anteceding days bring.
It was a pleasure reading your thoughts.Stourley Kracklitehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15529306506710881732noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-126505819071547839.post-21414711949389240472022-02-23T10:25:44.762-08:002022-02-23T10:25:44.762-08:00Sorry, I am Kerrie.Sorry, I am Kerrie.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-126505819071547839.post-72556362945180309552022-02-23T10:09:34.273-08:002022-02-23T10:09:34.273-08:00I am his daughter from his first marriage. When I knew him in Korea he only spoke of hoping to own a cattle ranch, but maybe that was only if I moved to Montana and helped him. He wasn't in the same draft I was, that is, I was in the 31st. A draft was a group of Marines sent to replace those Marines who had served 13 months and were ready to return home. I can't recall whether Bill returned home ahead of me or later than me. I know we were sent to different duty stations. I was sent to 29 Palms, but a short time later I went to Camp Pendleton as a rifle coach.

BTW, he was given a Bulova watch perhaps as a graduation present after finishing high school. That watch kept coming off. Many's the night we looked for that watch in Kunsan sand. He went on more R&R's than I did and sold me the watch so he could have more money to spend in Japan. I think I still have that watch in a box with a few other watches that quit working.

Lawrence Helm, former USMC SgtLawrence Helmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05215801232171928120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-126505819071547839.post-63159844686791337072022-02-22T19:06:00.615-08:002022-02-22T19:06:00.615-08:00Ok, I see it is posting. Sorry.
As to my exercise, I have done squats, but my biggest concern was the leg movement required for walking and the squats went beyond that. So my most significant exercise currently is on my stairs. I can now go down backward with just barely enough leg strength to take a step with my weak leg. I have not put that to the test yet going down the stairs.

LawrenceLawrence Helmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05215801232171928120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-126505819071547839.post-85741873126071128112020-09-13T10:28:08.899-07:002020-09-13T10:28:08.899-07:00Little House on the Prairie cast was filmed near a...Little House on the Prairie cast was filmed near a nuclear site & a lot of the cast have died from cancer, Landon & French are 2 of them but there are more who died from cancer on that show. You can check it out. He has written on Krushchev and Snyder's Bloodlands. All fabrications and lies!I am presently engaging him in email debate and he uses the same tactics as Muhkin yet all the time giving lip service to his 'objectivity, open mindedness and use of evidence. I joined the Marine Corps during the Korean War and spent 13 months of my three year enlistment over there. I was there while the war was still going on, there during the armistice signing and there for some months after that signing; so in that particular war saw a before and after situation. The officers I saw were sent over there for short periods of time presumably, we thought, so that they would be able to wear the ribbon. If memory serves, they were over there for six months. Enlisted men were there for 13. Granted there wasn't a lot to do after the armistice, but the officers seemed to have contempt for enlisted men and we returned it. They seemed administrators rather than people who could actually do any fighting. Your experience was obviously different.

The rest of my USMC experience wasn't all that different. I went through all my training (conducted by NCOs), went to Korea for 13 months, was reassigned to the 2nd 90s at 29 Palms for a short time and spent my final period as a rifle instructor at Camp Pendleton.

Did you ever see the movie BATTLE LOS ANGELES? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1217613/ The main character, the hero who does all the fighting and leading is a Marine Corps Staff Sergeant. He had been ready to retire after 20 years of service. Why didn't he have a higher rank? Someone out there must have the same prejudices I do.

LawrenceLawrence Helmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05215801232171928120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-126505819071547839.post-73052529322735907772016-12-05T12:34:58.714-08:002016-12-05T12:34:58.714-08:00I liked your article.
