The New York Review of Books has the same eerie
classified personal ads minus the give-and-take.
Depending on my mood, the NYRB ads are funny or
tragic. So many liberated, virile, active
intellectuals who have ninety-nine interests and
two hundred virtues, hiking and cross-country
skiing to their epicene eateries or progressive
rallies, yet who are apparently reading all the
time! So many witty, savvy bon vivants who are
nonetheless incredibly lonely!
